The Problem

It all begins with an idea. I was by no means that “fit” kid growing up. Don’t get me wrong! I participated in plenty of activities. Track & Field, Martial Arts, Gymnastics, Weightlifting, the whole nine yards. But those activities only made it easy for me to excuse my bad habits. In particular, my relationship with food. And as I got older, and had less time for the things that kept me active, I slowly started to experience the consequences therein.

 

By the time the COVID-19 Pandemic started, I was at my heaviest: 215 lbs, 26% body fat. Certified Type 1 Obese.

 

The Question

The problem I was looking to solve was a simple one: could I get myself back into the shape I wanted to be in, despite the obstacles life throws at us? Without affecting my job, my relationships, my responsibilities? Could I possibly get into better shape? Was there some way to diet, to exercise, to introduce good habits into my daily life, without preventing me from doing the things I needed to do?

I came across many solutions. But none that seemed to fit what I was looking for. I no longer had the time to spend 4+ hours being physically active to offset the indulgences I had. Every personal trainer I spoke to offered me generic solutions; not a single one even bothered to ask me about my lifestyle, my interests, or even the goals that I had beyond “lose weigh. My experience with fad diets only drove home this point: there was no band-aid that was going to fix this problem. And whatever the solution was, it had to be one tailor-made for me.

The Idea

I decided to educate myself. I got my Certification as an ISSA Elite Personal Trainer. I even went on to get my Certification as a Nutritionist. And I started to put myself to work.

In one year, I went from 215 pounds and 26% body fat, down to 151 pounds and 10.1%.
I was:

  • Benching 50 lbs more than my record

  • Squatting 100 lbs more than my record

  • Deadlifting 100 lbs more than my record

  • Military Pressing my bodyweight

    Officially, the leanest and most “in-shape” I’ve ever been.
